General Notary
What do I need to bring to a notary appointment?
Quick Answer
Bring a valid government-issued photo ID, all documents that need notarization, and any additional signers. Do not pre-sign documents that require a jurat.
To ensure a smooth notary appointment, bring the following items:
Required:
- Valid, unexpired photo ID: Government-issued with signature and physical description, passport, or military ID. See accepted ID list
- Your documents: All pages of every document that needs notarization
- All signers: Every person whose signature needs to be notarized must be present (or use RON)
Important tips:
- Do not sign beforehand if the document requires a jurat — you must sign in front of the notary
- Acknowledgments may be pre-signed, but the signer must still appear before the notary
- Bring a second form of ID as backup when possible
- If a credible witness is being used instead of ID, that person must also attend with their own valid ID
